“As I’ve been considering NFF’s path, my thoughts increasingly turn to justice,” writes Aisha Benson, CEO, in NFF’s 2023 annual report. “So much of our work is ultimately about seeking justice for the people, communities, and organizations that have often been denied it.”

NFF is advancing justice and equitable prosperity through financing, consulting, and advocacy. Learn more about our work in NFF’s 2023 Annual Report:

Some of the ways we listened and responded to community needs in 2023:

Financing

We originated more than $50 million in total new lending to 32 organizations. This money was leveraged to support $336 million of total project funding.

Our 2023 new financing will benefit more than 178,000+ individuals and families, and is helping to create 276 units of affordable housing. Our total loan portfolio benefited more than 4.7 million individuals and families in 2023.

We delivered direct, tailored financial consulting to 208 nonprofits, working alongside leaders on everything from budgeting and financial storytelling to how to have conversations with funders about covering the full cost of delivering services.

Building Community Wealth and Well-being

In 2023 NFF’s lending helped a nonprofit recycling center and community space achieve a long-held dream of owning a facility in its home neighborhood. In Los Angeles, our financing helped recuperative care providers adapt to new realities. In Philadelphia, a $3.7 million participation in a bridge loan with other lenders was used to renovate a nonprofit community-centered health institute.

Meanwhile, our consulting supported cohorts of Black nonprofit leaders in Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, as well as Philadelphia, fostering connections, building financial resiliency, and addressing systemic barriers to financial management. Financial consulting accompanied loan funding in Los Angeles, Denver, and beyond, helping nonprofits to build resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.

Our goal in all that we do is to create greater racial equity and community wealth and well-being, in the form of:

  • More jobs and services that support thriving communities.
  • Greater agency of community members to control community resources.
  • Healthier, more vibrant communities.

“I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and grateful for your ongoing support as we navigate this path together,” Aisha writes. “I’m also grateful for our clients, who are at the forefront of the fight for equitable prosperity in our country. And finally, I’m grateful to NFF staff, who show up to our work with enthusiasm and commitment. Let’s all continue to champion justice, racial equity, and community wealth and well-being.”
