Increasingly, my life is centered on connection. I realize more and more that I’m drawn to many different types of connection, and that I’ve built my career and spent my time entirely centered around it. The older I get, the more I’m interested in connecting with my family’s complicated history, containing seven generations of Texans and a mess of other Southern identities. I create music on my own but never feel more satisfied than when I’m making it in collaboration with other musicians. I never miss an opportunity to share a meal instead of eating alone. Professionally, my career-long obsession with arts and culture is wholly driven by my love of the deep connections that artistic work both presents and represents, at once within ourselves and between each other. And now, at NFF, I get to connect both with the remarkable minds at work here and with the crucially vital organizations we support. I get to connect information and insight with knotty problems and tricky situations. And I get to connect with the people doing things that amaze me, working to make connections of their own in communities all across the country.
