New Loan Closing: Housing Works

June 30, 2021

Housing, mental health services, and HIV/AIDS support for New York City residents

$936,000 acquisition loan

Housing Works’ mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and income-generating businesses. Grounded in the belief that housing is healthcare, Housing Works develops affordable and permanent supportive housing primarily targeted at individuals who are currently unhoused and live with HIV/AIDS or a mental health condition, struggle with substance abuse, or who have been recently released from incarceration. With access to housing and other supportive services, these individuals can in time transition into stable, permanent housing and employment.

This loan will help Housing Works develop a 36-unit permanent affordable and supportive housing facility in the East New York section of Brooklyn that will target chronically homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS, serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Housing Works will provide supportive services for tenants in 21 units; the remaining 15 units will be reserved for low-income households earning up to 60 percent of annual median income. In addition to high-quality housing, residents of this facility will have access to six full-time Housing Works staff and mental and physical health services in the Housing Works health center across the street, ensuring that they have steady access to the care they need to thrive in their new homes.
