Nonprofit Resource Equity and Access: A Call to Close the Gap

Nonprofit Finance Fund’s free financial capacity-building workshops in New York City in 2017 explored how funders often perpetuate the cycle of chronic under-investment in small nonprofits and those led by people of color.

7 Concrete ways funders champion funding equity and inclusion in their grantmaking process are:

  1. Fund a continuum of organizational capacity improvement.
  2. Reach beyond existing relationships and networks.
  3. Value community assets and non-traditional signs of measured results.
  4. Promote clear, trust-based communications.
  5. Grant flexible funds that cover the full costs of programs and services, with appropriately sized reporting requirements.
  6. Build capacity where needed.
  7. Be patient.
